Fri, 01/26/2018 - 17:19 -- Heidi Holguin

Over two weekends in October, the Allen Chapter partnered with the Allen Heritage Guild and The Plaid Tag to complete 530 service hours for Ultimate Gift.  The Allen Heritage Guild is an organization the exists to preserve original structures from Allen's early community. To enhance the village of homes, a church and a school, we were asked to build a chicken coop, outhouse, clothes line and a garden.  The Plaid Tag worked with us to construct mats made of plastic bags to be distributed to the Homeless.

This project especially impacted their Members.  They are so grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve with this ongoing need.

YMSL Loudoun South Chapter UG Benefits Wounded Soldiers

Fri, 01/26/2018 - 17:08 -- Heidi Holguin

YMSL Loudoun South Chapter's Ultimate Gift recipient was the Bull Run Retreat House of the Serving Our Willing Warriors.  The Retreat House provides respite for our nation's wounded soldiers and their families. Over the course of two weekends in October, YMSL Loudoun South Chapter transformed a portion of the retreat house’s property in anticipation for upcoming visitors and their families.  Our chapter donated the materials and labor to complete three big projects: fire pit, treehouse, and serenity garden.  In addition, we donated needed supplies for the house guests.

Over the course of two weekends in October, the YMSL Cedar Park Chapter transfomed the facilities at Open My World, a therapeutic riding center for those with special needs in Leander. We prepared the perimeter of the covered arena for a French drain to prevent cancellation of therapy sessions due to flooding issues , refurbished a man-made pond that now allows the blind to use their sense of sound (trickling water) and smell (scented plants), converted an old shed into a volunteer/visitor retreat, redesigned the horse wash rack to provide a safer & more efficient bathing process for horses & staff, turned a former rabbit enclosure into a welcoming outdoor patio, refurbished an aviary and Koi pond, performed grounds maintenance, and installed several plants at the front of the property for a more welcoming experience for visitors. The chapter donated over $3k to the project and the committee secured donations of material, labor and delivery from local businesses valued in excess of $15k to bring these projects to completion. Over 150 moms and sons participated, logging 300+ hours. The chapter was also highlighted in a CBS Austin “Making a Difference” news segment for their efforts in transforming the operations at OMW.

The Four Points YMSL Chapter partnered with The United Way for Greater Austin on NATIONAL MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY, October 28, 2017, to complete several improvement projects for Lucy Read PreK, located in central Austin.  Approximately 120 mothers and sons from the Chapter volunteered for 3 hours on this day.  They painted stencil hopscotch and other games on the play court, painted walkway striping, organized the teacher supply room, organized the Physical Education supplies closet, and performed much-needed courtyard and playground landscaping and gardening improvements! The physical transformation of this preschool campus was amazing, and the 300+ children who attend the school as well as the faculty immediately benefitted from the enhancements!  The chapter members also donated the Home Depot gift cards which were used to purchase the supplies needed for this very impactful project.
