Each chapter of YMSL determines local needs and identifies philanthropies which will benefit from our services. Organizations served frequently include hospitals, community homes, Cystic Fibroses, Meals on Wheels, etc.  Please click on the "Philanthropies We Serve" tab to the left to see many of the ones we have served at recently.

Can members suggest new philanthropies?

Of course! Please submit any new ideas you have for philanthropies to your local chapter Philanthropy Coordinator who will work with you to assess the opportunity and determine next steps. Please note that the YMSL Board and the Philanthropy Coordinator work diligently to make sure YMSL is able to meet the needs of the philanthropies we serve. The number of philanthropies served by a chapter is limited by the service hours we are able to provide.

What are the time requirements?

Mothers and sons in grades 9-11 must each complete 20 service hours each year (a majority of the hours served must be served together as a mom/son team) in support of YMSL approved philanthropies. Mothers and sons in grade 12 must each complete 15 service hours. In addition, mothers and sons are expected to attend all scheduled meetings (sons are required to attend 5 meetings, moms are required to attend at least 3 meetings).

What are the financial requirements?

Prospective new members will pay an application fee and once accepted they will pay their annual membership dues. Annual dues are determined by each individual YMSL chapter. In addition, each mother and son is required to purchase tickets for and attend the yearly banquet.

When do you join?

Members join YMSL in the Spring of their son’s 8th grade year. (Chapter's will up FAST. If your son is in the 8th grade you need to make sure you have a Sponsor no later than February 1st).  They will begin their service the summer before their 9th grade year.
