"Team Work Can Make Dream Work" and "Two can do more than one" are two quotes that ring true for two Flower Mound, TX Chapters of the Young Men's Service League (Pacesetter & Integrity).  The two chapters joined forces to deliver an incredible Ultimate Gift to their selected philanthropy,  Journey to Dream, and their "soon-to-open" youth home Kyle's Place.

The Pacesetter Chapter invited Flower Mound's newly formed YMSL Chapter, Integrity, to participate in a large scale multi-faceted multi-phased Ultimate Gift Project benefiting Lewisville's  "Journey To Dream",  a community philanthropy that  both chapters support.  Their service work centered on "Kyle's Place".

Journey to Dream believes that ALL teens have an opportunity to realize their potential and pursue their dreams.  Journey to Dream exists to Embrace, Equip & Empower teens to overcome adversity and live purposeful lives.   Kyle’s Place will provide emergency shelter and 24 hour care for teenagers 13 to 18.  Whether running away or asked to leave, aging out of foster care or unable to stay at family shelters, homeless teens need safe environment, food, clothing, medical care, and supportive services just to begin regaining stability.  Many unaccompanied youth have experienced life on the street and the trauma that goes along with it.   Kyle's Place is the only youth shelter in Denton County and the first of its kind providing services specifically to unaccompanied youth.

The Flower Mound Chapters chose Journey to Dream's "Kyle's Place" for this year's Ultimate Gift for the following reasons:

  • JTD's tremendous amount of needs in preparation of opening  this home
  • The young men's overwhelming desire to support teens their own age in their own county (Teens helping Teens)
  • The timing of the opening of Kyle's Place & Ultimate Gift Season coming together perfectly.

The BIG Ultimate Gift Weekend took place October 15th - 16th.  The Chapters ran 7 two-hour shifts (4 shifts on Saturday and 3 on Sunday).  During these two days, they delivered the following:

 Furniture Projects:

 ·     Built 3 Arm benches

 ·     Built 2 Flat benches

 ·     Built 1 Large Farm-style picnic table that will to go under the future outdoor pavilion.

 ·     Built 1 Adult-sized therapeutic sandbox to adjoin the future serenity garden.

 Lawn care Projects:

 ·     Removed old shrubs, ground stumps, mowed the overgrown property and weeded the front.

 Painting / Staining Projects:

 ·     Painted the exterior brick building that was a darkish red brick with yellow trim to their requested off white "Urban Putty".

 ·     Stained front fence, 5 flower boxes, and 6 garden boxes to match the future pavilionand newly built furniture.

 Thank you Note Project:

 ·     "Thank you" Writing Station:  Addressed envelopes and wrote thank you notes to attendees, donors, and volunteers of recent Gala.

In advance of the BIG weekend, there were four other shifts that worked behind the scenes.  These four teams were small but mighty.  They fulfilled important duties comprised of shopping  and transporting  materials and supplies from Lowe's to the off- site location.  The other shifts consisted of precutting the wood projects and transporting the projects / materials to Kyle's Place the night before the BIG event.

The collaboration between the two chapters during  this BIG weekend event was absolutely phenomenal!  A grand total of 526 volunteer hours were served between the two chapters.  Hats off to the newly formed Integrity Chapter and to their 93 members who participated!   That's outstanding!  The Pacesetter Chapter had a great turnout, too.  They had 145 volunteers  and this number will rise upon the completion of Phase II.  The weekend shifts averaged 30 members per shift.  Several dads and even two highly skilled grandfathers helped with the wood projects.  The chapters appreciated their servant hands and hearts.   This was an outdoor event and the weather cooperated... "Sunny and perfect!"  The staff at Journey to Dream continue to thank the two Flower Mound Chapters.  They are still quite amazed at the transformation that took place in one weekend.

The Ultimate Gift weekend will be followed up with Phase Two, "The Deep Clean & Make Ready".  The contractors are working on the interior build-out and hope to be finished soon.  The timeline got bumped a bit.  This happens in the World of Construction.  Journey to Dream anticipates a completion date in late November.  Once they receive their Certificate of Occupancy,  they will call YMSL to complete the final phase of the Ultimate Gift project.  Phase II is smaller, but also important.  It will entail three shifts to perform heavy duty cleaning.  The YMSL members will make the home ready for the teens who will  occupy Kyle's Place.  What's wonderful is that all of this should take place before the cold weather sets in.  The future looks much brighter!
